Shamkhoun Nekong is a traditional bag crafted by the Khiamniungan people of Noklak district, Nagaland. The name “Shamkhoun Nekong” comes from the Khiamniungan language, referring to this unique bag made from fibres extracted from a specific variety of nettle plant. This traditional craft represents both the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Khiamniungan people, who have long utilized natural resources in their environment for practical purposes.
Songmao Meyan is undertaking a project to document the entire process of creating the Shamkhoun Nekong. This includes recording each step, from identifying and collecting the nettle plant to extracting its fibres and weaving them into a finished bag. The project will involve both audio and video recordings, ensuring that the intricate knowledge and skills involved in the craft are preserved in detail.
