Ayinam Ering and Yonmin Tayeng
Documentation of Adi Culture and History through Traditional Heirloom Beads
Adi community
Arunachal Pradesh, India
Ayinam Ering and Yonmin Tayeng, members of the Adi tribe, aim to document traditional Adi heirloom beads as carriers of cultural memory, clan history, gender identity, social value, and inter-community exchange. Rather than treating beads as mere ornaments, the project examines their names, types, meanings, ownership histories, inheritance, gendered use, and changing value over time. The project will record the knowledge of elders, bead owners, and community experts, including storytellers, bead specialists, and Aabang specialists, from the Shimong, Karko, Komkar, and Panggi areas. It will also explore how beads were acquired through inheritance, trade, marriage exchange, and gifting.
